The market town of Bourg d'Oisans sits at the base of
Alpe
d'Huez, made famous by the Tour de France, and has a population of approximately 3000
people. It is based in the Isere department of France and
lies at the point at which six steep valleys
(known collectively as the Oisans)
meet at 750 metres above sea level.
Due to its central position in this area, Bourg d'Oisans
is the ideal location for
a mountain bike holiday
or road cycling holiday
and climbing
in the Alps.
Apart from riding your bike, there are various other
activities and things to do, including the hiking trails
originating in the town (route maps can be picked up from
the Tourist Office). In July and August you can enjoy
the great outdoor swimming pool and you will also find
tennis and squash courts and canoe trips along the river
running through the town. Close to the town there are
white water centres, paragliding, horse riding, adventure
parks and golf.
In the winter the town is ideally located for
skiing
and boarding at
Alpe d'Huez and
Les Deux Alpes in particular.
The town itself has approximately 10 bars and 15 restaurants,
an abundance of patisseries and shops selling local crafts so is an
ideal place to spend a few hours to explore and chill out after a days
activity in the Mountains. The local market takes
place on a Saturday morning and there are regular
entertainment events which take place throughout the year.
The Ecrins National Parc has a visitor centre in the town
where you can find out more about the local area, and you
will also find the Museum of Flora and Fauna is also in the
town.
There is also a small cinema if you fancy a French movie.
